Huang Xingtao, male, was born in 1965, graduated from the Department of History of Beijing Normal University in 1992 with PhD degree in history. He has worked at the Institute of Qing History of the Renmin University of China since July 1992. In 2000, he became a professor. He is now the executive director of the Institute of Qing History, deputy director of Academy Committee, deputy director of Human Studies and Social Sciences Research Base of the State Ministry of Education. He also serves as member of the National Editorial Committee of the History of the Qing Dynasty, member of council of China Society of Foreign Relations History, and member of editorial board of Studies in Qing History.
He was a visiting scholar at Harvard-Yenching Institute from July 2003 to July 2004, at Japan Kobe University for three months from December 2004 to March 2005. In 2001, he was praised as one of the 100 Talents of Social Science Theory in Beijing for New Century. In 2002, he was granted the Young Teacher Award (Research) of High Education Institution by Fok Ying Tung Education Foundation in 1993. In addition, he obtained many other national social science academic awards above provincial and ministry level (his Gu Hongming, a Great and Strange Intellectual and The Republic of China, General History of Chinese Culture were awarded Excellent Achievements Prize for the Human and Social Sciences Research in National Normal High Education Institutions; Chronicle of Qing Dynasty that he participated in was awarded Excellent Achievements Prize for Beijing Philosophy and Social Sciences Research in 2002). For over 10 years, he has been in charge of many projects, including Studies of Major Western Sinologist of Modern Times sponsored by the Youth Foundation of the State Ministry of Education, Formation and Spreading of New Chinese Terms and Transformation of Academic Culture in Modern China, a project of National Social Sciences Foundation. He is now in charge of the research of a branch project of General History, the History of Qing Dynasty.
He keeps studies in the history of Qing Dynasty and the history of China in modern and contemporary times. His research focuses on the history of Chinese social culture, ideology and the relations between China and western countries in modern times.
His main publications include: Horizon of Cultural History: Self-Selected Collection of Huang Xingtao Academic Writings, The Republic of China, General History of Chinese Culture (co-author); Gu Hongming, a Great and Strange Intellectual (renamed as Commentary Biography of Gu Hongming, a Great and Strange Intellectual when published in Taiwan); Sketches of Gu Hongming: the Inner World of a Strange Intellectual; Historical Reports on Prosperous Times under the Reign of Emperor Kangxi and Qianlong (co-author). He published many articles, including “Oriental Culture School and Its Cultural Patterns,” “National Self-Awareness and Sign Identification: Historical Investigation of the Formation and Establishment of the Concept of the ‘Chinese Nation’,” “Exploring the Significance of New Chinese Terms in Modern Times in the intellectual History and On ‘General History of thinking’,” “On Modernity of New Terms and New Concepts at the End of Qing Dynasty and the Beginning of the Republic of China,” and Rising and Historical Significance of the Concept of Modern ‘Culture’ at the End of Qing Dynasty and the Beginning of the Republic of China.
He translated and published many books including: The Spirit of the Chinese People (with dozens of thousands of circulation), The Chinese Painted by Themselves (China’s Excellent Best-Seller Award in 1998), Collective Works of Gu Hongming, The Last Confucian: Liang Shu-ming and the Chinese Dilemma of Modernity.
The publications he edited include: The Image of China in Western Perception (translation series), Serial Books of Famous Cultural Families, and New History Studies: A Prospect of Multi-Disciplinary Dialogue. All these books have stirred extensive responses.
