History

In 1950s, Renmin University of China teamed up a program of Qing studies in response to the proposals to write a  Qing History made by then the leadership ofChinaincluding the former Communist Party Chairman Mao Zedong, the former Primer Zhou Enlai and Dong biwu etc. TheInstituteofQing Historywas officially established in 1978, thereafter making a prestigious research center in the Qing studies.

Faculty

The IQH is currently the world largest institute in teaching and studying the Qing history. It has 34 regular faculty members. 3/4 of the faculty members have Ph.d degrees. The prestigious historians Dai Yi (the former Chairman of All China Historians Association) and Li Wenhai (the current Chairman of All China Historians Association) are still working together with their mid-aged and young colleagues of different expertise. The IQH faculty members belongs to 4 divisions: Ancient China Studies, Modern China Studies, Special Studies (Theory & Methodology, Historiography, Historical Geography, Historical Philology, and Ancient Documents Studies etc.), and Sino-foreign Relations, their major study interests are found in the Qing politics, economy, society, thought and culture, frontiers, and foreign relationships etc.

Programs

The IQH is one of the 100 Key Research Bases of the State Education Ministry for Social Sciences and Humanities, and one of the National Bases of the State Education Ministry for both Scientific Research and Talents Training of Humanity Majors. It is also an institute sponsored by the State  211 Project and the major academic organizer for the National Project of Qing History. It offers postdoctoral fellowships and graduate programs: 6 PhD degree programs (Ancient China Studies, Modern China Studies, Special Studies, Historical Document Studies, Theory of History & Historiography and Historical Geography) and 6 Master degree programs, among which the Ancient China Studies Program is a Key National Study Program.

International Exchange

The IQH is an important window for international academic exchange in the field of Sinology. For the recent 20 years, it has hosted more than 100 foreign graduate students, senior scholars and other visiting scholars from all over the world, organized and co-organized more than 30 important national and international symposiums, and established stable academic relationships with universities and research institutes in US, Japan, Germany, South Korea, Russia and the Territory of Hong Kong and Taiwan as well.

Academic Journal

Founded in 1982, QingShi YanJiu Tongxun  (Bulletin of Qing Studies), then known as  QingShi yanJiu  (Journal of Qing Studies), is a prestigious academic journal edited by the IQH of Remin University of China, and is listed as a National Core Journal in the field of social sciences and humanities. A quite number of excellent papers of Qing studies published in  QingShi yanJiu have made it a most reliable forum for both Chinese and foreign scholars.
