Xia Mingfang, male, born in September 1964, graduated from Lujiang Normal school in Anhui Province in June 1982, had been teaching at primary and high schools in rural areas. He studied at the Department of History and the Institute of Qing History of Renmin University of China(RUC), and graduated with a MA in 1992 and with a PhD degree in 1997. He is now the professor in the Institute of Qing History (IQH) and tutors PhD program. He is also the deputy director of IQH, and editor-in-chief of Studies in Qing History. In 2004, he was chosen the vice chairman of the newly founded Committee of Disaster studies History, a branch of the China Society of Disaster Prevention, and a member of the Association of Chinese Agricultural History.
His main research fields are the history of disaster and famine in modern China, the history of environment and the history of social economy in modern China. As a member of the research team on the topic of Disaster and Famine in Modern China at RUC, he participated in the writing of Sequel to Chronological Record of Disasters and Famine in Modern China (Hunan Education Publishing House), Top 10 Disasters in Modern China (Shanghai People’s Publishing House), and 100 Years in Modern Times: the History of Disaster and Famine, (Social Science and Documentary Publishing House). He is also an editor-in-chief and co-edited The History of Great Disastes in China in 20th Centure (2 volumes, Fujian Education Publishing House, Guangxi Normal University Press, 2001), Complete Encyclophedia of Disaster-Relief Policies in China (15 volumes and 4 sections, Beijing Ancient Documentary Publishing House, all 15 volumes are to be published). He is the author of Natural Disasters and Rural Society in Republic of China (Zhonghua Book Company, 2000). In addiction, he published a series of theses on such academic journals as Studies of Modern History, Studies In Rural Areas in China, and Studies in Qing History, including the following: Ecological Changes, Smithian Dynamics and Involution Theory: Commercialization in Rural Areas in China before 1949 with Multiple Perspectives (China Social History Review, Volume 2, 2000), Illusions of Development: Analysis of Income of Peasant Household and Peasant Living Standard in North China in Modern Times (Studies of Modern History, Volume 2, 2002), Inclination of Non-Humanity in Studies of China Disaster History (History monthly, Volume 3, 2004), Rural Market In China: Focusing on North China from Environmental Perspective (Guangming Daily, 11 May 2004). He is also a chief-editor of the translation series of Environment History Studies: Ecology and People (SLSWCC), and co-edited large-scale Collection Series Documentary Collectionof Social Investigations in the Republic of China with Li Wenhai and Huang Xingtao (12 books and 10 volumes, Fujian Education Publishing House, 2004).
He has undertaken four national or provincial research projects since 1996, and has been in charge of two key provincial research projects, including Progress of Modernization in Ecological Changes and Disaster Alleviation Measures, a project sponsored by national special foundation for excellent PhD dissertation from college and universities, and Documentary Collections on Disaster and Relief in Qing Dynasty, a fourth-level project of the National Complition Committee of The History of Qing Dynasty.
Awards:
He was honored as author for the 1st session of National 100 Excellent PhD Dissertation, granted by State Ministry of Education In 1999. He also got the 3rd award for excellent job in history studies at the 3rd session of China Higher Educational and academical Achievements in Social Science in 2002, for his article Natural Disasters and Rural Society in the Republic of China.
