Current Tibetan studies mainly focus on the history of religions and politics, while the research on Tibetan economic history is limited due to the lack of materials and information. A foreign scholar once said that the research on Tibetan economic history was the most weakest with few theses, let alone special books on it. Ma Dazheng, director of History and Geography Research Center of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and No. 1 authority in the studies of border areas in China once wrote an article and highly praised Zhang Shiming for following Professor Ma Ruhang in further studies of national policies in border areas in Qing Dynasty. Research on Development of Tibet in Qing Dynasty is the only academic book on Tibetan economic history and unmatchable due to its high level and difficulties. The entire content of “Social Structure of Tibet in Qing Dynasty” has been quoted in the form of giving reference by History of Lhasa (China Social Science Press, 1994), a national project sponsored by Social Sciences Foundation. “Development of Border Areas in Qing Dynasty” won Renmin University of China Excellent Research Achievements Award in 2001.
From 1996 to 1999, he participated in a key research project of China and World in the 18th Century, a key national project in the 8th five-year-plan of National Social Foundation, cooperated with prestigious Professor Dai Yi in the writing of Military, China and World in the 18th Century. It has been praised by Professor Jochen Schlobach of Universität des Saarlandes, president of the International Society for Eighteenth Century Studies (ISECS) as a “significant milestone event.” In the book, he pointed out the separation of military power and political authority after the Eight Banners got across the Great Wall, which is a change never noticed before, and clarified a misunderstanding Qing history research community holds against the system of the Eight Banners. He analyzed the so-called “solid ship and powerful cannons” after the Opium War, corrected many prevailing common mistakes. Chinese prestigious historians including Gong Shuduo and Zhang Qizhi praised highly of China and World in the 18th Century. The book won 1999 Renmin University Excellent Research Awards and was nominated as candidate book for 1999 China Books Award in 2000. It was also awarded the 2nd prize of 2000 Beijing Social Science Research Achievements Award.
During the study as a PhD candidate from 1996 to 2000, he studied a large amount of original versions of classics in German, Japanese and English, accomplished PhD dissertation of Research on the Development of Economic Legal Theories, exploring the rising and development of foreign economic legal theories from the perspectives of academic history by using original materials in English, German and Japanese, is the most pioneering research achievements in the field and highly praised by research community. It is published by China Democratic and Legal System Publishing House. Professor Liu Wenhua pointed out that the research achievements “not only laid stress on the research direction of economic legal history in the studies of legal historiography, but also filled the blank in the theory research of economic law science. The entire economic legal studies community should thank Zhang Shiming for his achievements.” This is a compulsory reference book for college students majoring in economy.
He was among the first working at the mobile postdoctoral center of Renmin University of China, and Research on Historical Source of China Economic Legal System was the report produced before leaving the center, is now published by China Democratic and Legal System Publishing House. The book analyzes the formation of Chinese legal system, explores the differences between ancient economic laws and modern law of economy, cites the case of national interference in the supervision of copper mining in Yunnan on the basis on free operation, corrects the post-colonial academic attitude of entirely denying the tradition of China in times of transforming to market economy.
